NATIONAL REMOTE SENSING DAY (August 10- 17, 2022)

National Remote Sensing Day is celebrated every year on the 12th of August to honor the legacy and celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, father of the Indian Space Program. To commemorate the celebration, the M.Tech Geomatics Programme of CEPT University, Ahmedabad, in collaboration with the Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS), Ahmedabad Chapter, hosted the following events:

1. Maanchitra 2022 (Poster Making Competition): 10th of August to 15th of August

2. Guest Lecture by Dr. Rahul Raj on Hyperspectral Remote Sensing and its Applications:
(17th August)

1. Maanchitra 2022 (Poster Making Competition)

2. Guest Lecture by Dr. Rahul Raj on Hyperspectral Remote Sensing and its Applications

August 17, 2022

TOTAL ATTENDEES: 50 (Offline) + 25 (Online)

Dr. Raj is serving as a research scientist at Pixxel. His area of expertise is Hyperspectral Data and Drone-Based Sensing. He has completed his master’s and his Ph.D. in the field of Drone - based Remote Sensing for Precision Agriculture. He has published multiple research papers in reputed journals on national and international levels. He is also the recipient of various prestigious awards at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

The lecture focused on a brief overview of Hyperspectral Remote and its various application areas. Dr. Raj began his talk by introducing his organization, Pixxel, and highlighted that Pixxel is the first private sector organization in India to launch a Hyperspectral Satellite – Sakuntala (1st April 2022).

He covered the Electromagnetic Spectrum basics, including Optical Remote Sensing (Multispectral) and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing. This was followed by an introduction to spectral signatures of various materials, an understanding of the difference between Multispectral and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing products, absorption coefficient & wavelength variation, and how they affect the reflectance pattern.

He talked about the challenges faced while dealing with Surface and Atmospheric phenomena, followed by the post-processing operations of the acquired imagery. Lastly, he detailed the applications of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing in various domains, including Investigation of polymetallic deposits, detection of foreign materials in coastal waters, detection of rooftop types in urban areas, differentiation of recyclable and green asphalt, and many more.

The lecture was concluded with a Q&A session and a vote of thanks.
